The portugese man-of-war is a sihonophore, an animal made up of a colony of ogranisms working together. The man-of-war comprises four separte polyps. It gets it name from the uppermost polyp ,a gas- fillde bladder , or pneumatophore, wich sits above the water and somewhat resembles an old warship at full sail.Man-of-wars are also known as bluebottles here in africa for the purple-blue colour of their pneumatophore. The tentecales are the man-of-wars second organsim. A fourth polyp cotains the man-of-wars are found somtimes in groups of 1 ,000 or more , floating in warm waters throughout the world ocaens. They have no independent means of propulasion and etheir drift on the currents or catch the wind with ther pneumatophores. To avoid threat on the surface, they can deflate their air bags and brifley submerge.
